Diagonal TV's 'Carlos, King Emperor,' Bambu Producciones' 'Six Sisters,' Spanish pubcaster's top highlights at the market

Emphasizing its profile as Spain’s preferential production/distribution house for period TV fictions, Spanish pubcaster RTVE brings to Mipcom its newest bets: historical primetime skein “Carlos, King Emperor,” the follow-up to worldwide sales hit “Isabel,” and Bambu Producciones’ daily series “Six Sisters,” a melodrama set in Madrid, in the early years of the 20th Century.

Produced by Endemol Shine Iberia’s Diagonal TV, “Carlos” launched September 7 on RTVE’s core channel La 1 primetime and averages a solid 14% audience share after four episodes.

Toplining Alvaro Cervantes (“The Sex of the Angels,” “Luna, el misterio de Calenda”) and Blanca Suarez (“The Skin I Live In,” “The Boat”), “Carlos” portraits the life of 16th Century’s Imperator Charles of Habsburg, from his turbulent arrival to Spain, his growth as statesman, to his confrontations with contemporary powerful rivals such as Francis I, Suleiman the Magnificent and Henry VIII.

“We think that ‘Carlos’ will work very well internationally because not only tells the story of Spain but also that for Europe,” said Rafael Bardem, RTVE’s deputy director, Programs and Products Sales.

Also produced by Diagonal TV, “Isabel,” on Charles of Habsburg’s grandmother, Isabella I of Castile, broadcast succesfully on La 1 from 2012-2014, and sold to key territories such as the U.K. (Sky) and the U.S., acquired by Liberman’s Estrella TV free-to-air channel and VOD platforms such as Hulu and Netflix.

“Once we have open an international sales channel with ‘Isabel,’ it’s easier to continue selling products with similar characteristics,” Bardem added.

Created by Bambu Producciones, the producers of Spanish primetime hits such as “Gran Reserva,” “Velvet” and “Gran Hotel,” “Six Sisters” sets in 1913 and tells the story of the Silva sisters, members of Madrid’s high society, who enjoyed a trouble-free, confortable existence until their father suffered a serious accident that changes their life.

“Six Sisters” broadcast back-to-back with Boomerang TV’s telenovela “Acacias 38,” and both form part of TVE’s plans to reconquest with local TV fiction its former leadership in the Spanish after-lunch TV slot.

According to Rafael Bardem, who praises “Six Sisters” “excelent workmanship,” the TV serial has already generated previous interest from several TV broadcasters, especially from ex-USSR territories and Italy, which has become a highly receptive market for new Spanish TV fictions.
