One for all and all for . . . actually, sadly there’s only room for one talented, handsome musketeer in the nominations list for our Breakthrough Award.
Pasqualino, who got his black hair, kalamata skin and hot chocolate eyes (Aidan Turner who?) from his Sicilian and Neapolitan parents, first came to our attention in the gripping E4 drama Skins as Freddie McClair, a weed-loving college student.
The 25-year-old from Peterborough then scored a major breakthrough when he was cast as d’Artagnan in the blissfully silly BBC One drama The Musketeers (he was delighted, having been weaned on Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds). Pasqualino, who did an intensive one-week course in horse riding and sword fighting for the part (see what I mean about the next Poldark?), brought a quizzical demeanour and dry wit to the role and pinpricked the bombastic exuberance of the sillier members of the famous trio. He also brought excellently trimmed facial hair. Oh, and did I mention he’d make a great Son of Poldark?

FKA twigs, Luke Pasqualino and The Trip to Italy win South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2015


FKA twigs, Luke Pasqualino and Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom's The Trip to Italy were among the winners at the 2015 South Bank Show Sky Arts Awards last night (June 7).

Melvyn Bragg returned to host the ceremony, which prides itself on being the only awards show to honour all of the arts.

FKA twigs was appointed the winner of Best Pop category amid tough competition from the likes of Sam Smith and Young Fathers, while The Musketeers star Luke Pasqualino fought off ten other contenders to be awarded with The Times Breakthrough Award.

FAULT: How did you get your start in acting?
Luke: I got into acting when I was like nine years old. I joined a local drama workshop that was maybe an hour and a half every Monday night after school. I tried everything as a kid—football, ice hockey, tennis—and I got bored of those things very quickly. But the drama workshop was the one thing I never really got bored with, so I knew I was kind of onto something with that. And I really started to enjoy it as I got better at it. Then I left school at 16 and I worked for a couple of years—as a pizza chef in my cousin’s restaurant, and sweeping floors at my dad’s hair salon. And then, at 18, I got an agent and my first acting job, Skins.
