The Borgias is deeply focused on the CL dynamics, it's sort of the emotional pillar of the show. Even when you think they're being political, it's always there - for instance, there's no way Giovanni's assassination was a politcal one. And even here Alfonso may leave for political reasons but that ultimately doesn't have anything to do with Lucrezia realizing she's a pawn even to her husband, it just ends up with the "Only a Borgia can truly love a Borgia" quote. I realized this is very American though. Every biopic I know is very sentiment-driven.
